Climbing on the Island of Bornholm
Welcome to this net-guide for rock-climbing on the island of Bornholm.
Where?
Bornholm is a small Danish island located in the Baltic Sea between Sweden, Poland and Denmark. This is the only place on Danish soil where you will find natural rock (Excluding Greenland and the Faroese Islands)
Access is by bus and ferry from Copenhagen. It takes 3 hours using public transportation. You can also fly from Copenhagen to Rønne.
Climbing?
The type of rock is granite and the style of climbing is traditional. Protection is placed on lead and fixed gear is frowned upon. You will not find any bolts and very limited amount of fixed gear on Bornholm. This is not a sports climbing venue, but more similar to British minded adventure cragging.
You can climb on sea cliffs or in inland gorges. There are also some very good routes to be found in some of the old quarries. You will find approx. 300 documented routes on Bornholm. Bouldering is becoming increasingly popular and Bornholm sports some very good venues for this purpose.
When to go?
It is possible to climb on Bornholm all year long. In cold winters you can even find some decent ice climbing on the island. Generally the best time for rock climbing is from April to October.
